A viral video is surfacing on the internet which shows nature’s one of the awe-inspiring creatures, the rare and giant blue whale spotted off the coast of Massachusetts in a rare back-to-back sighting. The viral video was shared by Cape Ann Whale Watch, a touring group based in Gloucester, Massachusetts, on Facebook on July 8. Taking to Facebook, the group wrote, “We got to see this ‘largest animal on our planet’ on both of our trips today.” The rare sight was witnessed on July 4, 2024. The video shows the blue whale spouting water and breaching to the surface. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), blue whales are the largest animals on Earth. The Cape Ann Whale Watch noted that blue whale sightings are rare in the region, believing this site occurred after almost two decades. Blue whales, the largest animal of Earth are considered as endangered under the Endangered Species Act and protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, according to NOAA. Reportedly, Commercial whaling was a major threat to the species throughout the 1900s, before the protections were incorporated. According to NOAA, the primary threats blue whale populations currently face are vessel strikes and getting entangled in fishing gear.
