Stand tall Bengaluru as the Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP) finally got a giraffe for you all. The two and a half year old giraffe, named Gowri has been donated by the Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens in Mysuru. Gowri travelled over 20 km to reach the park on April 3, 2018. This will be the first giraffe at the park and the officials are expecting it to be a major attraction. The BBP authorities have been trying to welcome a giraffe since five years now. As per media reports, Gowri was born to Krishnaraja and Lakshmi, two other giraffes that inhabit the zoo at Mysuru.

Two staff members from BBP were sent to get necessary training and to get accustomed with the animal.  But Gowri was not the first choice to BBP. TC Ravishankar, executive director of Mysuru Zoo told TOI, “Initially, we had planned to send Bubli, who is nearly 15ft tall, but she wasn’t comfortable, so we decided to send Gowri, who has responded well. On Tuesday, we transported her in a special 12-wheel low-bed trailer to Bannerghatta Biological Park.”

Gowri is 13.5 feet tall and was born on December 19, 2015. As of now, Gowri will not have any buddy at BBP. The officials has requested for another male giraffe which the Mysuru Zoo at present is unable to meet. Sharath Babu, a wildlife expert was quoted saying, “Gowri will be a single specimen, like many other animals at BBP. Socialisation will be an issue for such animals and they won’t be happy. Also, the giraffe eats from the tree as it can’t bend and eat. Hopefully that is taken care of.” It will take some time to find a company for Gowri. The Bannerghatta Biological Park has opened the gates from April 4, 2018 for the people at Bengaluru to meet Gowri.
