At the beginning of this week, a video of a man in space suit walking on the potholes of Bengaluru, making it look like craters took over the internet. People jokingly began to caption the video as a “low-cost astronaut training.” However, the motive behind sharing the clip on social media was different. It was initially shared by Karnataka’s famous visual artist, Baadal Nanjundaswamy. The aim to share the video was clear: to show the awful condition of the roads. The motive was heard. After the fake moonwalk video went viral, it quickly gained BBMP’s attention. And soon, the civic body responded to the clip by beginning construction in the area. Video of Low-Cost Astronaut Training in Bengaluru Street is a Hit on Social Media, Thanks to City's Potholes.

In the earlier video, a man can be seen carefully walking, as if he is on a lunar surface. During the end of the clip, one can see the real scene behind the moonwalk space. It shows the streets of the metropolitan city filled with potholes. An auto drives past that area. The video gained a lot of attention and people from the other cities too supported the idea to protest.

The viral video earned millions of views and definitely the attention of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). It is the official body which is responsible for civic amenities and infrastructural asses of the city. Nanjundaswamy visited the same spot recently, which is reportedly identified as the city’s Herohalli road. Sharing the videos and images of the work in progress, the artist wrote, “Thank you, people, for such an overwhelming response and support! Work in progress. Quick and prompt response from @BBMP.”

Construction Begins!

We must acknowledge the power of social media. It once again showed that online campaigns in unison definitely get response. People lauded BBMP for such quick response. Those who hate potholes now wants to extend the idea beyond Bengaluru. Citizens are inspired by the viral video and even started debating which city in India has “moon-like” craters roads.
