The #MeToo movement has been a significant campaign against sexual harassment and assault which gained momentum globally. As more and more women participated and made it a significant one, a beauty queen from Massachusetts has advocated the cause very well. Maude Gorman, Miss Plymouth County 2018 for the Miss Massachusetts Miss America Organization. But she returned her crown when one of the organisers made a joke about the popular women's movement on the stage. Gorman resigned from the title last week.
Gorman, herself has been a survivor of sexual assault. The host on the stage made a bad joke regarding the #MeToo movement. In the skit that was performed, they showed someone portraying God. And when asked as to why the Miss America officials got rid of the swimsuit competition, the person held up a board reading, “#MeToo.” Gorman said to CNN, " I instantly knew I had to do something. It was going to eat away at me if I didn't." She called the skit very inappropriate to the movement that empowers survivors. She even posted on her Instagram about her resigning from the title.
Take a look at Maude Gorman's post about giving up the beauty pageant title:
The Miss America Organisation then posted it on their Facebook page that the skit was not approved or part of their script. All the contestants were at the backstage when the joke was made but Gorman's ears were all on what was happening. She expressed her displeasure, "I wasn't comfortable staying as Miss Plymouth County. It went against everything I have worked hard for. I was Miss Massachusetts World in 2015. I saw myself as a leader in the community and made appearances to speak out about sexual assault and tell my story." She truly believes in the cause of the movement and made sure she stood by it, even if it meant giving away the coveted title.
