We have known for some time that ants use their bodies to form living structures when they get into a bind. In the ant’s world, it is a strange and peculiar place with endless secrets. They are seen building bridges to shun the gaps, group together to create a raft many times to save themselves in flood and even temporary shelters to house the queen and their offspring in case of an emergency. In another remarkable moment, over one million ants were captured to work together to construct a bridge to attack a giant wasp nest. The video of the highly organised ants was shared on Twitter which since then is going viral. New Wasp With Monstrous Sting Discovered Near Amazon Rainforests.

On August 5, an electrical engineer, Francisco Boni took the video of the swarm of ants dedicated jointly to design the bridge. The chilling yet fascinating piece of engineering has been viewed over 700,000 till now, and the count is on. Boni’s tweet reads, “Attack of legionary ants (also known as army ants or marabunta) to a wasp honeycomb. Impressive the level of swarm intelligence and collective computation to form that bridge.”

It is not just limited to invade such honeycomb.

Boni further explained that “When this type of attack happens, the wasps usually escape and the ants do not leave until they’ve completely looted the honeycomb, carrying pupae, larvae and eggs, as well as some adults who did not manage to escape. They can even build across the water!”

During the process, the researchers have explained that a leading ant initially comes to a gap in its path and it will begin to slow down. The next leader in line repeats the same process, and it continues until the gap is bridged. In fact, the ant colony takes less than a minute to build bridges. Such clouds of army ants can accomplish remarkable tasks!
