Mumbai is witnessing the wettest ever monsoon this year. While there are just two weeks left for September to end, Mumbaikars are experiencing no respite from the continuous downpour. The city has already recorded 3,458.2mm rain between June and September 15, making the monsoon of 2019 the wettest ever. And Amul, the popular diary brand of India has dedicated a topical ad marking the wettest monsoon ever. Amul shared the ad on Twitter with the caption, '#Amul Topical: At 3453mm, and counting, Mumbai’s wettest monsoon ever!' While the monsoon arrived 15 days late in the city this year, Mumbai broke its past rainfall records this time.

The ad shows the Amul mascot being surprised at the new record with the caption 'Lai Bhaarish!' as the caption. Lai Bhaarish is a Marathi usage that refers to heavy rainfall. According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) disaster management cell, prior to this, the city received the all-time high 3,452 mm rainfall in 1954. The 65-year-old record was broken for the first time this year. This year, Mumbai also recorded the third-highest September rainfall this year. Till September 15, the city received 899.5 mm rainfall and the average is is 327.1 mm. As per reports, the highest rainfall recorded in September was 920 mm in 1954.

Meanwhile, India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted heavy to very heavy rain in Mumbai from Thursday. Between September 18 and 25, "heavy to very heavy rain" is expected in Mumbai, Palghar, Thane, and Raigad districts. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) received surplus rains primarily due to the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) effect. It is an atmospheric phenomenon which causes a difference in sea surface temperatures caused by cooling in parts of the Indian Ocean.
