...But What Exactly is the Gaja Gamini Walk?

According to the Kamasutra, elephants symbolise “unrestrained raw sexual power.” A female elephant, or hastini, is depicted as the most lustful of women, exuding a sensual and voluptuous grace. The "Gaja Gamini" walk, referenced in the Mahabharata, describes women like Queen Draupadi, who were known as Mada-gaja-gamini, signifying their elegant, elephant-like stride. In essence, the walk embodies a graceful, voluptuous woman’s hip-swaying motion, inspiring numerous artists and poets, including M.F. Husain.

Renowned painter M.F. Husain ventured into filmmaking with Through the Eyes of a Painter in 1967, but it was his 2000 film Gaja Gamini, starring Madhuri Dixit, that solidified his reputation as a filmmaker. The film, based on Husain’s series of paintings 'Gajgamini', explores various stages of a woman’s life, with the iconic walk symbolising feminine grace and allure. This walk had earlier been performed by the legendary actress Madhubala in Mughal-E-Azam during the song "Mohe Panghat Pe"
