With over 100 tribal girls in participation, Pallavi Durua from Bhubaneshwar won the title for the 'Tribal Queen.' The beauty pageant event was aimed to showcase the rich culture and tribal traditions of India. Called the Adi Rani 2018, Kalinga Tribal Queen Contest is an initiative supported by Schedule Caste and Schedule Department, Government of Odisha and the State Tourism Department.

Panchami Majhi of Titlagarh and Rashmirekha Hansdah of Mayurbhanj were the first and second runners-up of the beauty pageant respectively. Pallavi belongs to Koraput district. The show had each of the girls representing something unique of their particular tribe. 20 girls were selected to walk the ramp for the finale. It was a good way to showcase the tribal culture from all over the country. Talking about it Dr Chidatmika Khatua, Chief Secretary General of the award committee was quoted to a news agency, "A 'rani' or a 'queen' is not just about beauty. Usually, when we talk about tribes, we represent them through their dance or art form. Through this contest, we have tried to give them their individual identity."

Girls dressed in their best tribal outfit to walk the ramp for the finale. Like other competitions here too was a question-answer and a show of talent. Girls displayed their acting, singing and dancing skills. All the three tribal queens will get to act in a short film which will be produced by Mumbai-based producer. The initiative will definitely give a chance to these girls to display their talent to a larger part of the country, which is largely unaware. Apart from the winners, there were also special awards for different categories. Other awards included tribal attire, photogenic face, best skin, best personality, best presentation of ornaments, best presentation of own culture and best in talent.
