It is the 17th anniversary of the deadliest terrorist attack on the American soil; 9/11. Islamic extremists flew planes into New York’s Twin Towers, the Pentagon in Washington DC and Pennsylvania, killing almost 3,000 people which triggered significant U.S. initiatives to combat terrorism. In the December 2001, the United States government released a tape in which Osama bin Laden took responsibility for the attacks. 17 years have passed, invaders have been captured or killed, but the terror can never go away from the people’s mind across the world. Twitter condoles the victims of the tragic attack in America's history. 17 Years Since 9/11: Osama bin Laden’s Mother Opens up about her Son.

As we approach 17 yrs. to the tragedy of 911. My memories of that day.
I was eating breakfast as the 1st plane hit. When the 2nd plane plowed into the 2nd tower I knew it was terrorism. A feeling of despair they are trying 2 destroy us economically-let’s rejoice they didn’t !! pic.twitter.com/8MOrUccNNp

A third plane, American Airlines Flight 77 travelling from Dulles, Virginia to Los Angeles hit the Pentagon Building in Washington. United Airlines Flight 93, the fourth one travelling from Newark, New Jersey to San Francisco crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
They woke up to the news.
17 years ago, 9/10, was my last day in the Pentagon before heading back to sea. I slept in on 9/11 for the first time in months. Then my daughter came, frantically, to wake me up. Watching TV was surreal. My office was destroyed. Many shipmates and friends were gone forever.

Suspicion was quick on al-Qaeda. The United States of America responded by launching the War on Terror and invaded Afghanistan to depose the Taliban which failed to fulfil US demands to deport Osama bin Laden and expel al-Qaeda from Afghanistan. After escaping capture for almost a decade, Osama bin Laden was located and killed in Pakistan by SEAL Team Six of the United States Navy in May 2011.
