Miss Universe platform is supposed to be a coming together of girls from different countries and cultural backgrounds, displaying their beauty and talents. But a new video has exposed the mean behaviour of Miss Universe contestant from America Sarah Rose Summers and Miss Australia Francesca Hung against Miss Vietnam and Miss Cambodia. During an Instagram live session between Valeria Morales (Miss Colombia), Sarah Rose Summers (Miss USA) and Francesca Hung (Miss Australia), Sarah Rose Summers made fun of Rern Sinat from Cambodia and H'Hen Nie from Vietnam over their English speaking skills. The video has clearly not impressed people on social media and it went viral. Her mocking non-English speaking participants has not gone well with anyone, people slamming Miss USA already. Summers was even compared to Mean Girls character Regina George for her mocking. To exactly quote her about Sinat, she says, "Miss Cambodia is here and doesn’t speak any English, and not a single person here speaks her language. Francesca [Miss Australia] said that it would be very isolating." And about H'Hen Nie from Vietnam, she said, "She’s so cute and she pretends to know so much English, and you ask her a question and after having a whole English conversation with her, she goes.." followed by mimicking her smile.
The fun-making did not stop at that. Summers looked at Valeria Morales from Colombia and said, "You at least speak pretty good English." It wasn't just Summers but Frances Hung from Australia also showed 'pity' on them for not knowing English. It was reported that Rern Sinat was hurt by these remarks but one of the sources from the pageant said that things were better now. In fact, it is said that Miss Australia and Miss Cambodia were friends and all the contestant have been provided with translators so that language does not become an issue. Francesca Hung posted another image with Miss Cambodia to tell how the entire thing was misconstructed by people. "We were merely saying it must be even more difficult at times not to have a single other delegate being able to speak [Khmer] … which in fact, makes Nat [Miss Cambodia] an even stronger contender [for the crown]," she wrote.
People on social media were calling names and questioned if these girls deserved to be in the competition for their racist remarks. Some called it bullying the other contestants. The criticism against them rose but it is said that the video was taken out of context. The girls have been questioned about their comments and their chat was sympathetic and not demeaning to anyone.
