At a time when we are reading and creating awareness about the scarcity of water, keeping the water stored is a must. Some parts of the country, especially the rural interiors have to face drought-like situations. But a ride through rural parts of Ludhiana, Punjab will leave you awestruck with the way people here conserve waters. Well, like most of us they have water tanks above their bungalows but it is the shape of these water tanks that will blow your mind! Used to seeing a black cylindrical water tank, the ones in Punjab are far from the resemblance. The water tanks here take shapes of aeroplanes, cruise ships, bullock carts or random things like a alcohol bottle or even football!
These designer water tanks have become an identity of the residents here. Ex-army men have an army tank on their bungalow. Someone from the navy has a cruise shaped water-tank. Apart from the army, there are tanks resembling animals and birds too. These are like magnificient structures, colourful and elaborately made, which will instantly attract your eye and make you look at them more than once for sure!
The trend was started when certain NRIs started settling back in their home village and wanted to showcase their privilege to everyone. Retired army officers and enthusiasts made it a display through their water tanks. Now the water tank has become symbolic of not just one’s status but also their background and likes! Some even associate it with good luck, so an aeroplane water-tank is said to brighten up your future and take you to better prospects abroad!
Take a look at some of the pictures:
Taking pride in tractor
Nope, not a plane landing on the terrace!
There is no beating the bullock-carts though
Wonder if alcohol's coming instead of water from this tank?
Always proud to be a part of the Army
US return, has to do some show-off!
Aren't these amazing? Like any other trend, the designer water tanks have been adopted in the nearby villages and also in different states in the North. These extremely funky water tanks in Punjab need to be seen to believed. They are not just a mark of social status but also add to the uniqueness within the state.
