Going to a temple in India means no non-veg food, no alcohol consumption among many other things to do before you go pray to your God. But go in Thailand and you will be greeted with millions of beer bottles inside a temple. Not just inside, even the outside because that is what makes this temple. Do not be shocked, this is no joke. Wat Pa Maha Chedi Kaew, a Buddhist temple in Thailand has beer bottles in its architecture. The temple is located in the Khun Han district of Sisaket province and boasts of its unique architecture comprising of Heineken and a local beer bottles.

The name of the temple Wat Pa Maha Chedi Kaew translates to 'Wilderness Temple Of The Great Glass'. That’s not surprising, right? The story behind this architecture goes back to 1984 when a group of Buddhist monks just started collecting the beer bottles which used to be littered around the sea. The monks used these bottles to build the temple complex. Eventually, all the sections including The washrooms, sleeping quarters and crematorium were all built with the bottles. That’s not all, they have even recycled the beer bottle caps to form a mosaic of Lord Buddha.

All the interiors are also made up of beer bottles

Very Glassy!

The bottles add to the shine of the temple

The monks wanted to find a solution to the rising litter and they found the most unique one, must say. The temple becomes a big representation of eco-friendly tourism, as the construction now attracts many eyes from local as well as foreign tourists. The entire temple made of green and brown bottles also provides good lighting within.

All the bottles are recessed into the concrete superstructure. The work is quite intricate and beautifully done. It goes on to show another unique way of recycling the glass. When the monks took things into their own hands, they built a temple out of it. For an Indian worshiper, alcohol and god is a big sin and here Thailand has a temple made of beer bottles. Deserves a visit, right?
