A Siberian lake has been attracting a lot of Instagrammers for its stunning beauty. However, a Russian power plant said that the man-made lake is dangerous as waste from the coal plant is dumped there.
A turquoise lake in Siberia has become a popular place among Instagrammers around the world for its scenic location. Social media influencers have been flocking the place to get photos from in front of the exotic-looking water body. While the stunning waters are grabbing eyeballs on social media, government officials are warning tourists to stay away from Novosibirsk Maldives. Although it looks clean and pristine, the man-made lake is toxic and potentially dangerous. Novosibirsk Maldives is a highly toxic artificial pond where dump ash from a nearby coal plant is dumped. The company which runs the plant has warned people that it is unsafe for swimming. The Siberian Generating Company (SGK) in a statement on Russian social network VKontakte last month said that the lake is filled with chemicals that can cause allergic skin reactions. Instagrammers have been warned against swimming in the lake. The company said, "This is because calcium salts and other metal oxides are dissolved in it. Skin contact with such water may cause an allergic reaction! The water is highly alkaline." According to reports, people could even get stuck in the ash at the bottom of the water. The post further which was further written in caps read, "THEREFORE, WE ARE REQUESTING, DON’T GET INTO THE ASH DUMP TO TAKE A SELFIE!"

Located near the Russian city of Novosibirsk, the lake received its nickname for its bright blue water. Officially, the Siberian Generating Company refers to the turquoise body of water as the waste site for Heating and Electrical Station No. 5. The plant also said that the ash dump was "not poisonous" and independent investigators had checked its radioactivity levels.
