The National Conference of Tourism concluded successfully on August 20 in Delhi. Organised by the Union Ministry of Tourism it saw some important announcements related to the development and promotion of tourism in the country. Just a day after the conclusion of the conference, the Union Minister of State for Tourism & Culture Prahlad Singh Patel announced that 137 peaks in the country are now open to mountaineering and trekking activities. Located in Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim about 137 peaks have got the Mountaineering Visa. Now foreign tourists can also climb on these peaks.

All the peaks are mostly above 6000 meters above sea level. Some of the peaks in Uttarakhand for mountaineering are Bhrigupanth, Kalidhag, Chirbas Parbat, Bewtarholi, Garur Parbat. Yanbuk, Ratangarian, Mahalaya Parbat, Rudugaira are open for trekking activities. This move will focus on adventure tourism to attract more tourists in this sector. Various other initiatives were also taken in order to increase more domestic tourists. A Hindi version of the Incredible India portal was launched. Other than attracting trekkers and mountaineer crowd, there was also a mention of promoting tourism. The Culture Ministry has decided to open 10 historical monuments until 9pm for common visitors across the country. He also urged all the States and UTs to open their important monuments till late at night for visitors.
