Foods to Avoid While Going on a Trip
Oily snacks: Oily snacks, chips, chocolates seem to be a good idea as munchies while on a road trip. But it will make you uneasy after a while. Oily foods are a bad idea and will often make your stomach upset. Also, it is better to eat light then gorge on food.
Ice and beverages: Heading out in the summers especially, one would always look for sipping on coolers or cold drinks. But as quenching as it may be, the ice that is put in the coolers or the drinks can be made of local tap water, not necessarily a healthy source. So, avoid relying on local stalls for a juice, milkshake or any beverage. Unless you can verify the source of water, skip having ice. Fruits: A lot of times on your way, you will come across local sellers selling fruits, berries, apples. But it is always advised to eat only those fruits that have thick skin. Bananas and oranges are good options. But apples, berries, strawberries, pears should be avoided. The simple reason being these fruits are exposed to bacteria and contain contaminants on their skin. So unless you wash them with good water, you should avoid berries and apples.
Raw vegetables: Eating a salad with veggie leaves may seem a good option but again it may not be a safe one. The reason again is the water that is used to wash these veggies. While most hotels and restaurants do use filtered water but if you are eating at the kind of the hidden gem of places, where you cannot rely upon. Always opt for cooked veggies.
Eggs: According to some experts, raw or uncooked eggs may contain microbes that cause diarrhoea, fever and cramps in stomach. Which fully-cooked eggs are commonly had for breakfast, the ones that are used as a topping on salads or pasta are breeding grounds for salmonella.
A lot of what you must avoid while being out and about has to do with water source of the area. Always do your research about the local water and try and ask for filtered water at all places. There is more risk of catching water-borne diseases while travelling than anything else. So next time you head out, other than the research of local cuisine, also devote some time to carefully learn about the water sources, what to eat and what not to eat on your way.
