Lalbaugcha Raja History

Lalbaugcha Raja Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal was founded in 1934 at Lalbaug Market by fishermen of the Koli community. The mandal was formed because of a vow (Navas) for the construction of the present Lalbaug Market today. In 1932, the marketplace at Peru Chawl was shut down which left the vendors and fishermen with no roofs for selling their produce. Hence, the local fishermen and vendors vowed to Lord Ganesha to create a permanent place for their market. Later local residents and landlord Rajabai Tayyabali agreed to dedicate a plot to construct the market. The fishermen and traders established the Ganesha idol on 12 September 1934 in gratitude. Ever since it became a tradition and grew popular as the idol which will grant your wishes. Tejukaya Cha Raja Ganpati in Mumbai: History, Theme and How To Reach the Popular Ganeoshtsav Mandal.

Lalbaugcha Raja Ratnakar Kambli (the head of the Kambli family) was a sculptor of idols and had roaming exhibitions at festivals across Maharashtra. He began protecting the idol in 1935 when some of his friends recommended his name to the organizers. The idol’s design is patented and the height of the Ganpati idol is around 18-20 ft.
