As Kashmir received the season's first snowfall, tourists rushed to the valley. A thick carpet of snow laid on pine trees and housetops making the picturesque locations look like heaven on Earth. Inhabited areas of the valley saw snowfall this time bringing down the mercury considerably. Places like Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Srinagar witnessed a steady influx of tourists owing to the snowing season. Talking about the early snowfall, an official of the MET department said, "Snowfall was witnessed in higher reaches of Kashmir valley including Gulmarg and Sonamarg in the wee hours today (Wednesday) while the city and other plains were lashed by rainfall." On Tuesday, the maximum temperature was recorded at 18.6 degrees Celsius and the city recorded just 5.6 degrees Celsius at 3.30 pm on Wednesday.

With the snow, the winter chill seems to have reached Kashmir early this year. The last couple of days have been witnessing temperatures below normal for this time of the season. While snow brings along a tide of happiness to the valley, it also dearly affects the apple growers. Local also faced the burnt as a thick layer of snow blocked roads and power supply was severely affected. Meanwhile, as snow filled the valley, Kashmiris are buying Kangris in plenty. It is earthen pot filled with ember used as a fire-pot to keep people warm during severe winter months as temperature dips.
