While women broke the shackles of patriarchy by fearlessly calling out their sexual predators and abusers, not all men were happy with it. Controversies have spun over the #MeToo campaign because some men feel threatened by the movement. Across Wall Street, men are adopting 'strategies' to cope with the #MeToo era according to exclusive reports by Bloomberg. The report further reveals that the strategies include avoiding going out for dinners with female colleagues, not sitting next to women, booking hotel rooms in different floors if there's a woman along, no one-on-one meetings, and avoiding similar situations with women. A wealth adviser reportedly put it that simply hiring women these days is "an unknown risk" According to the reports after the U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said that he avoids dining alone with any woman apart from his wife the effect has been seen more. More than 30 other senior executives suggest that many are scared by #MeToo.
It is excessively scary that powerful people like political centrist David Bahnsen have such uncomprehensible approach towards #MeToo. Reports by Bloomberg says, "Interviews with more than 30 senior executives suggest many are spooked by #MeToo and struggling to cope. 'It’s creating a sense of walking on eggshells,' said David Bahnsen, a former managing director at Morgan Stanley who’s now an independent adviser overseeing more than $1.5 billion." We really wonder what to expect from other such men in power.
Why Are Men Afraid to Hire Women Or Work With Them?
If it is not clear yet, the attitude and the "rules" set by these men is only making the situation worse for women. It seems like another way to put the women down by making sure that women tolerate sexual harassment just to secure their jobs. As ridiculous as it sounds, such behaviour is what deepens the fear in women of calling out the men at fault. Another possible reason why influential men are taking this route could also be to threaten women, like a warning that they don't open their dirty secrets out in public or maybe just to gaslight them into thinking that calling out the predator is not the right thing to do. Whatever the reason, it is extremely dishearting to hear men speak like this.
As simple as it gets, the least men can do is not use such demoralising words to make life even more difficult for the women. Do you think it is too hard a thing to do? Let us know your views in the comment section below.
