Is Game of Thrones Killing Your Sex Life? TV-Addicted Couples Are Less Likely To Have Sex, Says Study
A recent study suggests that couples with a television set are 6 percent less likely to have sex on a weekly basis.
For all the couch potatoes out there binge-watching Game of Thrones, here’s a piece of upsetting news. Your love for television may be the reason why your love life is suffering. According to a new research, people who have a television set are 6 percent less likely to have sex, in any given week compared to folks without a television. Scientists from University of Delaware, have found out that TV-addicted people around the world are showing 'willingness to substitute electronic companionship for human companionship'.
The study analysed about four million people across 80 countries and is a follow up to a similar research done in 2010. The earlier study has found out that an average person’s count of having sex five times a week in 1990 has gone down to three times a week in 2010. The access to television has been significant in this decline.
The researchers also added that this deduction to 6 percent is likely a conservative estimate. They believe more than television it is the smartphone which is responsible to be the “real sex-life killer”. The author of the research, who singled out the popular HBO series Game of Thrones as a culprit, argues that earlier television used to close down at 10.30pm with couples having nothing else to do. But now the availability of smartphones has changed that.
Interestingly, according to the market-research group Nielsen, US, adults spend more than 11 hours a day interacting with media, either by watching, reading or listening to content online. Also, as per a study, in UK, electricity and internet use peaks between 10 pm and 11 pm, when people are streaming their favourite box sets. A recent study also found out that sex deprivation can cause early death.
The results of this study by the University of Delaware further suggest that the income, age or level of education do not influence how much sex a TV owner has. Interestingly, many recent findings suggest that sex has several health benefits like it slows ageing, burns calories, boosts the immune system etc. Sex especially slows ageing in women. Talking about the benefits of sex, a report in Daily Mail, quotes California-based obstetrician-gynaecologist Dr Sherry Ross, explaining how having sex for just under 25 minutes causes a woman to burn around 69 calories, particularly if they are on top, in a squat position or achieve orgasm. Further elaborating on the benefits of sex for women, Dr Ross says that contracting genital muscles can reduce the discomfort of menstrual cramps, headaches and joint pain, and also advises women to schedule an orgasm for when their periods are due.
The findings by the University of Delaware were published in the National Bureau of Economic Research.
