World Thrombosis Day (WTD) is observed on October 13 every year and the day is dedicated to the condition Thrombosis. It was made to hold educational events in countries around the world to explain this disease. Thrombosis refers to a condition caused by the blood clots, known as a thrombus, inside a blood vessel. It prevents blood from flowing normally through the circulatory system. The complex disease refers to multiple conditions caused by the clotting of blood. A thrombus is a healthy response to any wound or injury as it prevents bleeding, but it can be harmful in thrombosis when clots obstruct blood flow through healthy blood vessels. Causes of Thrombosis

  • Immobilisation of certain body parts to promote healing.
  • Vessel wall damage
  • Hypercoagulability(is an abnormality of blood coagulation )
  • Increased Age
  • Surgery (usually orthopaedic surgeries)
  • Heredity causes
  • Cancer
  • Pregnancy
  • Hormonal imbalances (Increased estrogen levels)
  • Obesity
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Smoking

Symptoms of Thrombosis

  • Pain
  • Soreness
  • Redness or discolouration
  • Shortness of breath
  • Blood while coughing
  • Symptoms of Arterial Thrombosis
  • Cold arm
  • Minimal pulse in the arm

There are two main types of thrombosis; Venous thrombosis and Arterial thrombosis. In the first one, blood clots block the veins and veins carrying blood to the body are forced to move back to the heart. In the arterial thrombosis, arteries are blocked and blood can’t make its way to the heart. Venous thrombosis usually occurs in the legs. Sometimes the symptoms don’t even show till it gets severe.
