Every year October 13 is recognised as World Thrombosis Day (WTD). The day is dedicated to Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and draws attention to the often misunderstood condition of thrombosis. The day is marked with many events around the world aimed at increasing awareness about the diseases. The international campaigns work towards seeking global spotlight on thrombosis as an urgent and growing health problem. For those who do not know, Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a dangerous condition which causes blood clots to be formed deep in the veins of the leg, groin or arm. The clot then may travel causing a blockage in the lungs (pulmonary embolism). When one suffers from DVT and PE together they are known to have VTE. This can be a dangerous, potentially deadly medical condition. The blood clot hinders the normal blood flow in the body, interrupting the circulatory system. The common symptoms of the disease are strong pain, swelling and tenderness in one of the legs, warm red patch on the skin in the area of the clot, particularly occurs at the back of your leg below the knee.
World Thrombosis Day: Date
The history of WTD taking place on October 13 every year, dates back to the birthday of Rudolf Virchow. He is said to be a pioneer in the pathophysiology of thrombosis. The German physician, pathologist, biologist and anthropologist, Virchow's birthday is celebrated today dedicating it to his work in the development of the concept of "thrombosis". The man had a museum to his name. The Berlin Museum of Medical History was formerly known Rudolf Virchow's Pathological Museum.
Theme and Significance of The Day
As per worldthrombosisday.org WTD aims to increase global awareness of thrombosis, including its causes, risk factors, signs/symptoms and evidence-based prevention and treatment. Their mission supports the World Health Assembly's global target of reducing premature deaths by non-communicable disease by 25 percent by 2025. The main aim is to spread awareness about the disease and educate people about its effects and consequences. To highlight the global burden of the disease that is only increasing is also one of the goals of the organisation.
It is important that people having thrombosis feel empowered and are able to talk to experts about the risk and preventive measures. The highly overlooked condition needs people to seek immediate medical attention if they have signs and symptoms and for that being aware of the condition is important.
