A woman gave birth to premature quintuplets at a hospital in Jaipur on Saturday. However, one of the quintuplets was declared born dead while four other babies, of which are two girls and two boys are under medical surveillance. One of the babies is in ventilator at the hospital. While this is a rare case, the birth of quintuplets is quite common to medical history. Is Mariam Nabatanzi The Most Fertile Woman Ever? The 40-year-old From Uganda Has 44 Children!

IANS quoted Lata Rajoriya, Superintendent, Janana Hospital as saying, "One Ruksana (25) was admitted in the hospital on Friday night with labour pain. She delivered five premature babies on Saturday morning. One of them was born dead. Two girls and two boys have been kept under medical observation. All the newborns were underweight and are in nursery presently. The mother is a resident of Sanganer. The infant born dead was a boy." The doctor further also said, "This is one of those rare cases. But in medical history, such cases have happened earlier also with cases of two, three, four and even nine kids delivered."

Types of Quintuplets

Quintuplets are a set of five babies born to one mother at one birth. Quintuplets can be fraternal, identical, or a combination of both. Polyzygotic quintuplets occur from five unique egg/sperm combinations whereas monozygotic multiples are the result of one fertilized egg that splits into two or more embryos. Quintuplets can be all male, all female, or a combination of both. While cases of quintuplets are rare, the use of fertility drugs and assisted reproduction techniques has increased these types of pregnancies.

While quintuplets can be of different sex, in most cases they are all of the same sex. The first set of all-female quintuplets were born in the United States in 2015. The National Vital Statistics' US report reported the birth of 49 quintuplets and higher-order multiples which includes sextuplets, septuplets, or more in 2017. The most famous set of quintuplets are the Dionne quintuplets born in Canada in 1934.
