Smoking is injurious to health. Whether you are a smoker or a non-smoker, this warning has been read or heard by everyone. But people still smoke despite many evidences that suggest that it causes many diseases and damages the lungs. Perhaps people who do smoke, might want to quit right now. The reason being, Amanda Eller, a nurse in North Carolina shared a video comparing the lungs of a smoker with the lungs of a healthy patient. The smoker had smoked their way through one pack of cigarettes a day for 20 years, she wrote on Facebook.

As soon as you inhale a cigarette, it starts to affect your body with the nicotine and carbon monoxide straining your heart. Smoking reduces the amount of oxygen reaching your skin as you inhale carbon monoxide and 4,000 other chemicals.

The difference between the two sets of lungs is immediately striking before the nurse even inflates the lungs. The first obvious difference is the colour. In the healthy set of lungs, they are normal reddish pink, whereas the smoker’s cancerous lungs are blackened from years of inhaling tar. As Eller explains in the video, the lungs collapse in a way not seen in the healthy set. She says, “The elastance is gone. So, they will stretch out but then the recoil of them just snaps right back because there’s nothing left to hold them open.” By contrast, when she inflates the non-smoker’s lungs, they inflate and remain inflated for longer when she releases the pump.

Whether you are a chain smoker or a social smoker, smoking is still going to be addictive. Even one cigarette can really be harmful. We are sure you might be alarmed enough to quit after this shocking video. The video has been shared over 500,000 times.
