‘Popcorn brain’ is a syndrome that is gaining traction online. It describes a cognitive state of mind where the thoughts keep shifting from one to another, just like a bag of kernels popping. Popcorn brain is a more colloquial way of referring to the short attention span that is often caused by endless scrolling on social media and over stimulation from the internet. Popcorn brain occurs when your mind tricks you into believing that every ping and notification on the phone is important, leading to a scattered brain and unorganised thoughts. From reduced attention span and ability to focus to raising stress levels, social media may be doing more damage than we can imagine.  Do you find yourself reaching out for your phone while watching TV? Do you scroll Instagram while talking to your friend? Then you might have a popcorn brain. Health Experts Emphasise Mental Health, Suggest Meeting Friends, Taking Time To Discuss Issues (Watch Videos).

What Is Popcorn Brain?

Popcorn brain can be described as a lack of structured thinking and a tendency to shift between tasks without much thought. Social media is filled with ads, reels, clips, notifications, pop-ups, memes, and algorithms that have people constantly switching between social media platforms and keep them glued to their screens. This causes a popcorn brain. It results in a significant reduction in the attention span and causes people to switch their attention between tasks without focussing on one task. The constant demand to give attention to every notification that appears is a difficult cycle to break free from. People who suffer from popcorn brain are constantly inundated with thoughts and find it hard to finish tasks due to distractions and poor concentration levels.

Do You Have Popcorn Brain?

Imagine you go shopping for groceries, but you start thinking about how to decorate a corner in your house instead of focussing on what to buy. Suddenly, you wonder if you probably forgot to feed your dog before you left. Hurriedly, you reach out for your phone to text your friend to go check on your pet. But a pop-up or notification takes you to social media. Before you know it, you end up scrolling through your friend’s social media feed, followed by liking and commenting on their posts. By the time you have regained focus, you have forgotten or have completely ignored the task at hand. These are classic examples of a popcorn brain. Even though popcorn brain is a term that is gaining popularity among Gen Z, the trend can be seen in any age group. Mental Health: Living in Locations With High Concentration of Fast Food, Alcohol and Gambling Establishments Have Negative Influence on Young People's Mental Health, Finds Research.

This constant switching between tasks and thoughts can have adverse effects on mental health. It can reduce productivity and increase stress levels and anxiety. Hence, it is important to keep a watch over the screen time, make changes in habits, and focus on one task at a time.
