Reality is stranger than fiction when it comes to the beauty rituals of the rich and the famous. In the last couple of years, we have seen celebs do some pretty bizarre things in their quest for eternal youth. From Kim Kardashian’s vampire facials to Victoria Beckham’s bird poop-infused treatment, these ladies are ready to go to any illogical lengths to preserve or enhance their looks. But since their pretty faces put food on their plates, who can really blame them?
The latest among the list of zany celeb facials that has shocked us silly is Sandra Bullock’s suspicious-sounding ‘Penis facial.’ Bullock appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to promote her latest movie Oceans 8 when she made the bizarre admission that she swears by the treatment.
For those of you who have imagined one too many porn scenarios, we are sorry to disappoint you; it doesn’t involve spraying semen on someone’s face, although that would have sounded less awful because the penis facial is made from discarded foreskins of Korean boys. Brace yourself; this won’t be an easy read.
What's a Penis Facial?
The Penis Facial is a misnomer and a rather unfortunate one at that since only the foreskin is involved. It contains progenitor cells, which like stem cells tend to become a specific type of cells. These cells help generate collagen and elastin, two components of the skin needed to keep the skin firm and elastic. The cells are extracted from foreskins of babies in Korea, where male circumcision is very common. The discarded foreskins are then used to make Epidermal Growth Facial, casually named as the Penis Facial.
To prep your skin for a penis facial, the beautician will microneedle your skin by rolling an instrument with small needles on the face to cause micro-injuries. These small injuries work as microchannels, which take the product deep into the skin. Later, a chemical peel is used on the freshly microneedled face. The treatment is then rounded off with a serum made from the foreskin of Korean newborns, which is massaged into the skin. The whole process would cost you a cool £450, which is Rs. 41,295 in Indian currency.
Does it Work?
The Miss Congeniality actress didn’t mince words when she praised the treatment. She hilariously stated on the show: "I think when you see how good it is to your face you to will run to your local facialist, and say 'give me the penis!” to which the openly gay talk show host Ellen retorted: “I’m never going to say that!” Apart from Sandra Bullock, another A-lister Cate Blanchett is also a fan of the facial and is credited with its coining its unfortunate name.
