On Sunday, a 40-year-old brain dead woman’s cadaveric organ donation saved a life of a 24-year-old boy who was suffering from cirrhosis of liver and congestive heart disease. Two of her organs – heart and liver – were transplanted into the Silvassa resident who underwent a 14 hour long single surgery. The recipient had registered himself for transplant in August last year and he was on a wait list at Fortis Hospital, Mulund.
Three more lives were saved from the deceased woman’s organs in different transplant surgeries that took place in Mumbai and Chennai. After the woman had suffered a brain stroke at her residence in Mulund, she was shifted to Fortis Hospital where the doctors declared her brain dead. The woman’s family donated her heart, lungs, kidneys and liver. The lungs were sent to Apollo Hospital, Chennai for a waitlisted patient. One of the kidneys was sent at INS Ashwini, Colaba and the second was dispatched to Jaslok Hospital. The deceased woman’s family was counselled for organ donation. With support from Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC) and the family’s permission, the heart and liver were allotted to the 24-year-old boy.
The boy had to discontinue his studies due to increasing discomfort and worsened condition each day. A team of surgeons, including Dr Anvay Mulay, head of cardiac transplant, and Dr Rakesh Pai, senior consultant, hepato-pancreatic-biliary and transplant surgery, harvested the heart and liver from the deceased. A green corridor was created to transport the organs from the hospital to airport and other hospitals. The deceased woman’s family’s noble deed was able to save four lives.
