International Day of Yoga 2018: How To Perform Sukhasana, The Yogasana For Mental Peace

One of the greatest gifts India has given to the rest of the word is Yoga. It’s a unique practice that helps rein in the mind, the body and the soul at the same time, promoting physical and mental well-being. To pay homage to yoga and to create awareness about the many benefits of this wonderful spiritual discipline, the World Health Organisation observes International Day of Yoga every year on June 21. As a countdown to the day, let us focus on one yogasana every day. Today, let’s take a look at Sukhasana, an easy asana for the beginner.

What is Sukhasana?

The word Sukhasana is derived from the Sanskrit word Sukh, meaning happiness or comfort and asana, meaning pose. True to its name, Sukhasana is one of the most comfortable postures in yogasana, which can be performed by anyone irrespective of age or agility.

It’s the basic cross-legged sitting pose that many in the west call “sitting Indian style.” It’s said that the asana also has spiritual benefits and is an ideal pose for meditation.

How to Perform Sukhasana

It’s very easy to perform Sukhasana. To get started, all you need is a mat and a quiet corner of your house. It’s better to practice it in the morning when your bowels are clean. Here’s how you do it:

  • Sit with your back straight and with your legs stretched in front of you.
  • Cross your legs in such a way that both your knees are on either side, your shins cross and your feet are tucked under your thighs. Your left leg will be tucked under your right thigh and right leg under your left thigh.
  • Now rest your hands on knees and form a Dhyana Mudra by joining the index and the thumb finger to form an O.
  • With your back upright, sit in the pose for as long as you feel like, focusing on your breathing. By the end of it, you will feel light and relaxed.

What are The Benefits of Sukhasana?

The ease of performing the asana aside, Sukhasana also has a lot of benefits, mainly for the mind. It imparts a sense of well-being and calm. It reduces anxiety and relaxes your mind. Sukhasana helps align the body and strengthens the back.
