In an alleged incidence of medical negligence, an infant contacted HIV after platelet transfusion and the family now claims Rs6 crore in damages from the Aarohi Blood Bank and Fernandez Hospital in Hospital. According to a report published in India Today, the complaint alleges that the parties involved were responsible for a bungled platelet transfusion resulting in an infant becoming infected with HIV. The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) issued a notice after the infant’s family filed a petition.

As per the reports, the two-day old infant’s father filed a petition saying that the child was born with a defect whereby the anal orifice was too narrow for it to pass faecal matter, for which the infant had to undergo surgical procedure colostomy for rectification of the defect. The family alleges that the procedure was not well-communicated, and the infant’s family was informed that there would only be a few stitches. The infant underwent surgery on September 7, 2016 during which the father was informed that the baby needed platelet transfusion as there was a lot of blood loss and the baby was in a critical condition. Only a single donor needed to be arranged, but platelets from random donors procured from Aarohi blood bank were transfused into the baby, the complaint alleges.

On March 7, 2017, the baby was diagnosed with HIV and was allegedly denied further medical attention. The family then filed a petition before NCDRC and has demanded compensation of Rs6 crores for the alleged medical negligence. However, Fernandez Hospital officials said it hasn’t yet received the notice and the matter would be taken up as per law with the commission.
