A 28-year-old woman died in Tamil Nadu's Tirupur due to birth complications after delivering a baby at home on Sunday, according to media reports. Her husband and two family friends assisted her in giving birth to the baby, after watching some 'how to help pregnant women.." videos on YouTube. The woman reportedly bled to death when the placenta did not come out of her during the delivery.
The deceased has been identified as K Krithiga of Rathinagireeswar Nagar near Pudupalayam She was a school teacher and her husband Karthigeyan was employed at a knitwear buying agency. The couple have a three-year-old girl. City health officer K Boopathy told Times of India that Praveen and his wife Lavanya were family friends of Karthigeyan. Praveen and Lavanya believed in natural medicinal practices and hence they convinced Karthigeyan and Krithiga that giving birth at home was better than going to hospital.
A media report quoted the Nallur Police, saying that Kirthiga was taken to the hospital an hour and a half after she went into labour. "The contractions began at 2 pm but she was taken to the government hospital at only 3:30 pm after the baby was born. The husband has been booked and will be investigated in connection to the death," the police said.
The police also said, "As she has died after giving birth to the baby, I have lodged a police complaint against Praveen, Lavanya and Karthigeyan. The stopped her from reaching the nearby urban primary health centre (UPHC), and it led to her death." Based on a complaint filed by the woman's father, the Nallur police registered a suspicious death case.
