Family Members of Brain Dead Techie in Vijayawada Donate Her Organs, Saving Lives of Six People
After she was declared brain dead, a trust had approached the family members for organ donation, but they refused in the beginning as they wished to continue the treatment and did not want to lose hope.
In a heart-breaking incident, Mythri Tejaswini, a techie was declared brain dead after an accident in Vijayawada earlier this week. Tejaswini was returning home with her brother on a two-wheeler after shopping in the city on Tuesday, when a drunk constable hit the vehicle from behind as he was overtaking them. She was rushed to the hospital with head injuries. She went into coma on the spot with brain haemorrhage as her head got hit to the median. The doctors declared Tejaswini brain dead on Wednesday morning after she stopped responding to the treatment. The family members showed gumption and decided to donate her organs to give a new lease of life to six others.
The 27-year-old was an active campaigner of organ donation and participated in many programmes promoting the cause. After she was declared brain dead, the Jeevan Dhan trust had approached the family members for organ donation, but they refused in the beginning as they wished to continue the treatment and did not want to lose hope. However, the representatives from the trust and the pastor of the church where Tejaswini used to go daily counselled the family member. They convinced the family members to keep Tejaswini’s ambitions and values she believed in alive by donating her organs. Her father and her siblings finally agreed for organ donation and the doctors at Metro hospital made the necessary arrangements for harvesting her vital organs. The procedure was completed by 4 pm on Thursday and the police provided a green channel for transportation of her organs.
Tejaswini’s heart was given to Global Hospital in Chennai and Liver to Apollo Hospital in Visakhapatnam. One of her kidney was given to Vijaya Hospital in Vijayawada and other one in Narayana Hospital in Nellore. Both her eyes were donated to LV Prasad Eye Institute in Vijayawada. “We are proud to donate her organs as they will serve the needy. Drunk driving by a person has killed my sister and shattered my family. We do not know when we can recover from this shock,” her brother said in a statement.
Vijayawada Police Commissioner Gautam Sawang also visited the hospital om Thursday and consoled Tejaswini’s family members. He assured the family that strict action will be taken against the accused constable. Based on a police complaint by Tejaswini’s brother, the Suryaraopet police had a booked a case under Section 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the IPC. The accused policeman identified as Srinivas was taken into custody and suspended from duty.
