For the research, 14 women received injections for endometriosis pain for four months. By the end of the second month, women noticed a noticeable change. Some women also said the pain was mild to non-existent. They informed the researchers their use of painkillers had reduced since the experiment. Women noticed improvement with time as the procedure progressed. This experiment did not include women who had been surgically treated for their endometriosis. Botulinum toxin works by blocking acetylcholine from nerve cells. Acetylcholine is responsible for commanding the muscles to contract. If there is no contact between the muscle and nerves, the muscle relaxes. The neurologist and NINDS program director Barbara Karp, MD says, “Relaxing the muscle is probably not the only way it works. Botulinum toxin also blocks the release of other chemical messages involved in sending pain signals to the brain.”. This is not a permanent treatment but a step towards it.
