In yet another case of a medical goof up, a surgeon at the Sushruta Trauma Centre in Delhi operated upon a patient’s leg when he was in fact brought in for head surgery. The patient Vijendra Tyagi was admitted to the trauma centre after an accident. He had sustained minor injuries to his head and face. Incidentally, there was another patient by the name Vijendra in the same ward who had sustained leg injury. On April 19th, the doctor mistakenly wheeled in the Tyagi into the operation theatre and conducted a leg surgery, mistaking him for the second patient.

The patient’s son told the media that his father didn’t realise he was operated for the wrong body part as he was anaesthetised completely. The doctor went on to drill a hole in his right leg and inserted a pin. When the goof up was discovered, Tyagi’s son brought it to the hospital’s notice at once. Another surgery was then hurriedly performed to extract the pin.

The medical superintendent of the trauma centre who identifies himself as Dr. Bahl spoke to The Times of India and said that a committee was formed to investigate the matter and action has been since taken against the errant doctor. He has been barred from performing any corrective surgery without supervision, Dr. Bahl revealed.

The victim’s son recounts his father’s ordeal who was suffering from headaches and pain in the chest when he was admitted. Now the surgery has added to his woes because now he cannot walk after the procedure.

This is one among the many cases of medical negligence that has happened in the last few months, which goes to expose the lack of diligence plaguing the medical institutions of the country. Earlier this month, a doctor tried to cover up a case where he performed dialysis on a patient who was brought in for stomach ache.
