Ever since the salmonella outbreak has taken place in several states, the CDC has been investigating different sources. They have also been consistently warning people of keeping away from the sources of salmonella infection. What Is Salmonella?

Salmonella infection is known to be one of the most easily preventable bacterial infection, which if ignored can turn fatal. Caused by salmonella bacteria causing the infection is called salmonellosis. The symptoms of salmonellosis are very similar to the flue. Fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhoea between 12 and 72 hours following contact are some of the most common signs. As per the CDC, salmonella infection can be contracted if you ingest salmonella contaminated food like fruits, sprouts, eggs, chicken, pork and even processed foods. The infection may last for about a week and some people may recover even without treatment. However, sometimes if prompt treatment is not provided to the patients, salmonellosis can even kill. CDC says that the illness can be avoided by taking some careful measures such as washing hands with soap and water after contact with animals, using the toilet, handling diapers or helping someone clean up diarrhoea.

CDC reported that over 1,000 incidences of salmonella in 49 states caused two people to die from the infection leaving about 175 people got hospitalised from the outbreak. However, a 2016 study also revealed that salmonella has been contracted by a number of people due to kissing and snuggling their chickens. Approximately 13 percent of patients have reportedly kissed the chickens and around 49 percent of patients reported they snuggled the chicks. About 46 percent reported they kept the birds in the house and 10 percent said they let chickens stay inside their bedrooms.
