Dengue can exist without the presence of fever, says AIIMS doctors.
A sudden spike in body temperature is one of the first symptoms of dengue fever. It’s also one of its most recognisable signs. But a new study by the AIIMS has revealed that it’s possible to be infected by the dengue virus, even if there’s no fever. According to a TOI report, doctors from AIIMS presented a case study of a 50-year-old nursing orderly who was diagnosed with dengue but had no fever. The patient was tested positive for dengue after complaining of fatigue. The blood test showed high levels of sugar and acid in the blood. The red and white cells, and platelets were very low. The case was published in the Journal of the Association of Physicians of India where the AIIMS doctors stated that in the absence of fever, factors like low white blood cell count and low platelet count should be considered for detecting dengue. This is especially true during the times of an epidemic. The study added that dengue patients who have no fever are most likely to be old, diabetic or immunocompromised. While fever is a crucial symptom of dengue, other symptoms of the disease that needs to be taken seriously include fatigue, bleeding, nausea, vomiting, skin rash and pain.
