The patient who was allegedly bitten by rats while he lay in comatose has succumbed to his illness, according to news reports. The 27-year-old patient Parvinder Gupta was admitted at a Jogeshwari trauma centre, following a paralytic attack he suffered on March 6, 2018. His family had claimed that a rat had nibbled on his right eye while he was admitted at the civic-run Balasaheb Thackrey Trauma Care Municipal Hospital at Jogeshwari. News reports suggest that the patient passed away on Thursday evening after his health deteriorated further.

Gupta’s father told Mid-Day that he met with an accident last year but couldn’t undergo treatment properly, which led to swelling in the brain. The family collected Rs 10 lakh for the treatment, but he couldn’t be saved. “We did our best to save him. We’ll be able to perform his last rites after a post-mortem,” said Nirmala Gupta, his cousin.

After he suffered from a paralytic attack in March, Gupta was taken to Highland Hospital in Thane where the doctors detected a blood clot in his brain. His cousin Nirmala said that despite performing a surgery to remove the clot, Gupta was still in a comatose condition since March 8. Since the bill ran up to more than six lakhs, the family decided to shift him to the BMC-run hospital in Jogeshwari. The family claimed that there was a rat infestation in the general ward of the hospital where the patient was kept. Despite their best efforts to shoo away the rats, the patient was bitten by one inside the eye.

When his condition worsened, the doctors at the trauma centre suggested that they shift him to Cooper Hospital for further treatment. When the family refused, they were made to sign an undertaking, which would absolve the hospital of all the blame if the patient’s condition were to worsen.
