For the ones who don't know about angioedema triggered by altitude sickness, let's discuss the type of oedema further below:
What is Angioedema?
Very similar to hives, angioedema is a type of rapid oedema that causes swelling in the area beneath the skin and not on the skin surface. The health condition is usually the result of an allergic reaction, however, in some cases, it can also be hereditary. When someone is affected by angioedema, deep swelling occurs around the eyes and lips. In some cases, it may also show symptoms in the genital area, arms and feet area. The reaction causes a sudden swelling because of fluid accumulation that is known to affect areas with loose tissue. Therefore, the symptoms are usually exhibited in areas such as face and throat, limbs and genitals.
Types and Triggers
Angioedema is broadly classified into allergic angioedema, drug-induced angioedema, idiopathic angioedema and hereditary angioedema. And in the case of triggers, angioedema is commonly known to be caused during pregnancy, infection, or trauma. In some cases, angioedema can be triggered by high altitudes as well.
Sometimes, insect bites, contact with latex, contraceptive pills, and certain other medications, such as aspirin, may trigger angioedema as well.
