A Chinese girl who was hospitalised after suffering from constipation for five days was found to be carrying 100 tapioca pearls in her stomach. While the girl initially did not reveal what she had consumed, she eventually confessed that she had been drinking bubble tea with chewy tapioca balls in it. While the teenager said that she had had the drink only once, the doctor treating her said that indigestion cannot be caused to due to one drink. Bubble tea pears which are made of starch are difficult to digest. Moreover, some shops add thickeners and preservatives to the pearls making them even harder to digest. Consuming these drinks with pears in it on a regular basis could lead to gastrointestinal dysfunction. The teenager was kept under observation for some days in the hospital. She was cured was the intake of laxatives and was sent home.
Bubble tea is a Taiwanese tea-based drink invented in the 1980s. The drink comes in various flavours and is topped with chewy tapioca balls. The girl had consumed bubble tea five days ago which seems to have accumulated in her stomach leading to constipation.
