KEM or King Edward Memorial Hospital is a reputed educational and research institution that sees thousands of patients every day and more than a million every year. Funded mainly by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, KEM is frequently in the news for allegations of negligence or substandard infrastructure because the hospital cannot cope with the volume of patients that visit every day.
There are grievances of doctors and patients alike who complain about the shoddy treatment meted out to them at the hospital. Last year during the rains the wards of the hospital were submerged and doctors and patients were wading in knee-deep water.
