Can Your Vagina be Too Tight? Here’s What Makes Sex Painful for You

It's no surprise many women feel insecure or unsure about their vagina's 'tightness'. But the truth is that vaginas are extremely stretchy and a variety of factors mimic the feeling of tightness. Here's what is causing the discomfort down there.

If it hurts when your partner tries to put his penis inside you or if it does not go all the way through, it is a problem with tightness right? Not exactly. The feeling of tightness is a common problem but it doesn't mean that you have less elasticity down there. Vaginas are extremely stretchy and it is never a problem with the stretch. There are a variety of factors that can mimic the feeling of tightness and here are a few common ones.

Vaginal Dryness

Your vagina can be naturally dry and sometimes certain medications like birth control can mess with your lubrication, which can make sex feel very painful. Luckily, using a lubricant can make sex feel much better. That said, using a lube does not treat the underlying cause. If dryness is a problem with you, you should always bring it up with your doctor. Here's how good bacteria can improve your vaginal health.

Menopause

If you have hit menopause, intercourse can become very uncomfortable. Your body experiences a drop in estrogen which can lead to dryness and the thinning of vaginal tissues. This results in a feeling of tightness and irritation during sex.  An over-the-counter vaginal lubricant or possibly a prescription estrogen cream can help beat the dryness. Sometimes, hormone replacement therapy can also help. If that does not help, its best that you consult your doctor. These tips will help you have pleasurable intercourse after menopause.

Vaginismus

Vaginismus is a condition where the muscles inside their vagina contract involuntarily. Muscle contraction makes sex extremely painful.  In fact, even tampon insertion can hurt. Vaginismus may be psychological or a result of emotional trauma, and you may experience it from the very first time they attempt to have penetrative sex. While it may take some time to treat vaginismus, working your pelvic floor muscles with kegels can help deal with the pain.

Pregnancy

Hormonal changes during pregnancy can result in vaginal dryness and painful sex after childbirth.  Some women who tear during childbirth get stitched up too tightly, making the vagina too tight for sex. But that should not be a reason to worry.  Once your doctor goes back and loosens the stitch, you should be good to go.

So if you feel pain or tight down there be your health advocate and speak up to your partner and your gynaecologist for help.
