In a landmark case, a healthy baby girl is born out of deceased donor's womb that was transplanted from a woman in Brazil. The receiver of the womb has given birth to a baby girl making it the first successful case of its kind, as per reports by Indian Express. Published in The Lancet medical journal, this case also involved connecting veins from the donor uterus with the recipient’s veins. The previously failed attempts of uterus transplant from deceased donors have been in the Czech Republic, United States and Turkey. All the efforts failed to produce a live birth. Delivered via caesarean section, this baby girl was born at 35 weeks and three days. Her birth-weight was 2,550 grams according to the reports.
The research was led by Dani Ejzenberg, a doctor at Brazil’s Sao Paulo University. The doctor explained that this technique could offer women with uterine infertility to access a larger pool of potential donors.
