Despite his physical limitations, 53-year-old Bharat Tiwari is still self-reliant!
Bharat Tiwari is a 53-year-old priest who has been battling a curious health condition. Apart from making his body shrink to a tiny 2-feet frame, his unnamed ailment has also made his bones bendy and curved. The priest who lives in the city of Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh is known as the ‘bendy priest’ due to the odd shape of his bones. In an interview with Barcroft TV, Bharat explains that he developed the bone problem after a wall collapsed on him. Despite his destitute parents’ best efforts to treat him, Bharat’s condition only got worse. His condition has kept him from doing most jobs.
He prefers to look at the positive side of his affliction, believing that his condition is a gift from God. “This too is from God, and it shouldn’t make me sad or depressed. I haven’t got a disease,” he adds. Known locally as Ashtavakra (eight bends) Maharaj, Bharat is believed to be the reincarnation of a revered priest from Hindu mythology by the same name. But doctors are not ready to believe his religious interpretation of his condition. They are adamant that Bharat is suffering from a mysterious illness. A local doctor who takes care of him believes that it’s too late to seek treatment. Although there isn’t much scope for his betterment, the right care can prevent further deterioration of his health. Surprisingly, Bharat faces no trouble carrying on with his day-to-day activities despite his physical limitations. The 53-year-old is quite independent and is able to perform most of his daily chores like washing clothes and going to the market without relying on anyone. The society hasn’t been too hard on Bharat despite his appearance. His job as a priest has helped him gain the respect and admiration of his townsfolk. “Nobody taunts me,” he says, “Everyone respects me, and I bless them. They are all very helpful to me.” He has come to terms with his illness and has been leading quite a fulfilling life.
