Adenovirus Breakout: 10th Child Dies at The New Jersey Nursing Home Due to Fatal Viral Infection

The number of children dying from Adenovirus in New Jersy's Nursing and rehabilitation centre has risen from nine children to ten. Moreover, 17 others are unwell and their illness has a connection with the adenovirus outbreak at a New Jersey healthcare facility. Children with serious medical issues are the patients and require assistance to breathe and function.  It was only recently that New Jersey nursing home saw the ninth child succumb to the Adenovirus Outbreak. The ninth child had been reported a few weeks ago due to the respiratory illness. The reports further suggest that the ninth victim was described as "medically fragile with respiratory illness" by the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell. He lost his life at a hospital late Saturday night as per a statement received by CNN. What is Adenovirus Infection in Children

A study describes the Adenovirus as 'ubiquitous, double-stranded DNA viruses.' These viruses are commonly associated with pediatric illnesses of the upper respiratory tract. It includes illnesses as common as the common cold. Sometimes, adenoviral infections can also exhibit signs of gastrointestinal, ophthalmologic, genitourinary, and neurologic symptoms. The study also describes how most adenovirus infections are self-limited and rarely cause serious infection in adults and healthy children. However, sometimes these viruses can be life-threatening to people with a weak immune system, neonates and infants. Therefore immunocompromised patients, require more attention in the case of attack by the virus.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the viruses survive on unclean surfaces and medical instruments. Also, these viruses do not die by common disinfectants are rarely known to cause severe illness in healthy people. People with a weaker immune system are more at the risk of this virus and may be infected for long even after they recover, Areas with a large group of children usually suffer from such virus more than others.
