A team of doctors have successfully performed a hip replacement surgery on a 103-year-old man. The case was categorised as a high-risk surgery by the doctors and was performed using minimally invasive techniques, according to Dr. Sanjay Gupta, associate director of the orthopaedics department of Jaypee Hospital in Noida. The man, Mohammad Bandhu Baksh Ansari, from Giridih, Jharkhand had fractured his hip bone after he took a big fall in December last year while drawing water from a well for ablutions. He told HT that he couldn’t get back on his feet after the fall and had to be rushed to the doctor in Dhanbad. He was disheartened when the local doctor asked him to live with it. But another doctor in Jhumri Telaiya gave the centenarian some hope, despite expressing his inability to operate on him. “He advised me to go to a better facility,” Ansari told HT.

His grandson, 32-year-old Ghulam Gaus consulted his uncle Dr. Wahid Majeed, an Urdu professor at Jamia Millia Islamia. Since Jaypee Hospital is empanelled with Jamia for the treatment of its employees and relatives, Dr. Majeed consulted orthopaedic Dr. Sanjay Gupta for Ansari. To minimise bleeding and other wound-related complications, Dr. Gupta undertook a minimally-invasive method to treat Ansari. The doctor and his team performed the surgery with utmost precision and executed the surgery successfully.

Prior to the surgery, Ansari was in a lot of pain and discomfort, since no proper treatment was given to him. The injury restricted his movements and he was completely bed ridden. “Even the slightest movement would make him scream and toss in the bed,” Dr. Gupta told HT.

The delay in the treatment caused added complications such as dehydration, urine infection, chest infection and bed sores. The injured bones were reabsorbed and the soft tissues were scarred and stuck to the bone. These complications made Dr. Gupta and his team treat Ansari’s case with a lot of caution. The doctors also ensured that the surgery is not prolonged to avoid any chances of complications, all the while maintaining homeostasis and the duration of anaesthesia.

Dr. Mohammad Usman Khan, an associate consultant with the orthopaedics department at Jaypee Hospital and Dr. Gupta’s teammate, said that Ansari’s case was complicated due to the delay in treatment. His age and other underlying health complications added to the challenges. But the medical team was well-prepared with critical care unit and an ICU team in case of an adverse outcome.

Ansari was kept in the ICU for a few days and moved to the ward after the surgery. The nursing and physiotherapy team helped him get back to his feet in a few days. Ansari, who is a grandfather to 84, can now sit and walk on his own without any help from the walker. He is presently recuperating at his grandson’s house in Noida.
