Global Warming Effects: Coffee, Beer, Chicken Tikka and Other Food Items We Will Lose to Climate Change
Climate change will snatch away your dearest food items and the feelings would be no less than the end of the world, before the actual end!
We are reading about climate change. We are suffering from the heat waves and cold storms because of global warming. We are aware of the day zero situations that we may soon have to face but we are still not acting upon it. Or whatever we are doing is not enough. The sea enveloping the land, drowning civilisations, dramatic weather conditions are all a little far but sooner is the extinction of your favourite food items. This climate change will soon take away your fun from weekends too. Amongst the many things that face the fear of extinction, there is beer and chicken tikka too! The latest report by WWF points out that chicken tikka as a dish will be transformed heavily in taste in the coming years. Let us look at the food items which will soon face extinction due to climate change:
Coffee
Don’t you feel cranky if you do not get your cup of coffee before any important work? For habitual coffee drinkers, it is a potion. But coffee plantations are affected due to the warmness in the climate. The major coffee producing regions are threatened due to higher temperatures, longer droughts situations. Coffee requires very specific climatic conditions and a slight change can also make a huge difference. Indian coffee plantations went down by 30% in the year 2011. We may have started feeling it yet but can you imagine running to stores and being told ‘no more coffee!’
Chocolate
Its true, there is a prediction that the world will run out of chocolate in the next 5 years! The farmers in Africa are resorting to producing other crops than cocoa. 60% of the world’s cocoa production happens in Ghana. But the land quality has degraded, lack of available sustainable land has forced farmers to give up on the farming. So the almost $9bn cocoa industry is likely to face supply shortages. The amount of land under cocoa cultivation has decreased by 40% in the past four decades and in another decade, we might be running out of it!
Beer
Your weekend comfort partner is in much danger too and we are not kidding! Brewers around the world are struggling to find secure water supplies. Several parts of the world face the risk of day zero, a situation of no water left. The weather changes are also affecting the crops of malt barley. Along with water, your beer is at risk. Save water, Drink Beer will not work unless we save water!
French fries
And along with your beer, goes your beer snack to weather change- French fries. In fact, potatoes are at a risk of cultivation too. French fries are a popular dish across the borders and the consumption of potatoes is extensive given the growing population. The cultivation is not happening in the same vein and thus we face a risk of major shortage.
Chicken tikka
Those who eat non-veg, love gorging on chicken tikka masala and the similar dishes. But the latest reports will take away your cheer. By 2050, there would be no chicken tikka. By then the chickens will be fed on algae and insects and their production could be affected. By then not just chicken, we might also face a shortage of other ingredients used in the recipe like tomatoes, onions. So, the rates will surge naturally forcing people to opt for some replacements. In fact, UK’s favourite fish and chips also pose the same risk.
It is time we start blaming the climate and realise how collectively we are all responsible for this. Your love for beer, chocolate, coffee or chicken tikka has to tone down and love for the planet needs to rise instead. Because you if hope for having a good coffee or your beer securely then we need to start acting up and protect the extinction. It is not a joke guys, climate change will snatch away your dearest food items and the feelings would be no less than the end of the world, before the actual end!
