A brewery in Sweden has launched a new beer and it is very environment-friendly since it uses recycled sewage water. Branded as PU:REST, it is Sweden's first beer brewed with recycled water. The main purpose of this project is to highlight sustainable water management and raise awareness of the global water issues and the value of clean water. The product is a collaboration between IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, New Carnegie Brewery and Carlsberg Sweden.

A beer from sewage water may sound gross but it's perfectly safe and very in tune with nature. The water used for this brewing has been passed through a chain of purification stations with thorough testings to make sure it's drinkable. The IVL Institute said that they developed technologies which if used in right combination can change wastewater into the recycled pure good quality water. They said the quality is good enough to be reused in agriculture and industry. Brewmaster Chris Thurgeson has said, “We always try to find climate-friendly solutions in our brewery. For example, some of our spent grain has been converted into biogas, we use green electricity in the brewery, and we sort food waste in our restaurant.” Did you know about the alcohol made from woods in Japan?

This beer is now not just a fun alcoholic drink but it is also giving a very valid message of sustainable water management. If a good beer can be made from recycled sewage water then sure there are a lot of possibilities of recycling water and putting it to good use. “In a world threatened by water shortage, we wanted to show that we already have technologies to recycle wastewater into drinking water that is as clean as normal tap water,” says Staffan Filipsson, project manager at IVL. The brewers have assured that it tastes just as good as any other beer. So those who find something doubtful about drinking recycled water may opt for beer! The PU:REST beer will be made available in select restaurants from July.
