Guwahati, July 31: Famous and rare variety of tea from Assam, Manohari Gold tea, was auctioned at a record-breaking price of Rs 50,000 per kg under the pan-India auction system at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre in Guwahati on Tuesday. Reports state that this was the highest price commanded by any tea sold in any auction centre in India.
Informing more, Guwahati Tea Auction Buyers Association's secretary Dinesh Bihani said, as quoted by various media houses, "The price that Manohari Gold has fetched is the highest for tea in a public auction." last year, this special tea from North-East managed a price of Rs 39,001 a kilogram in that auction. Explaining the reason behind the high price of the speciality orthodox tea, Manohari Tea Estate owner Rajan Lohia said that this year only five kilograms of the variety produced. He said, "The weather was not very supportive. It is made from the finest clones, the P-126 which is said to be the best clone."
The highest auction bid for this tea was made by Sourabh Tea Traders Pvt. Ltd. who bought two kilograms of Manohari Gold tea in 2018 as well. Maheshwari even opined that he retailed the remaining one kilogram of tea that time at a whopping price of Rs 8,000 per 100 grams.
