Arunachal Pradesh’s Tea Variety ‘Golden Needles’ Sold at World Record Rs. 40,000/Kg at Guwahati Auction Centre

Golden Needle was purchased at Rs. 40,000 per kilogram by one of the oldest tea shops in Guwahati, Assam Tea Traders.

There is nothing as refreshing and relaxing as a cup of tea. What makes tea truly appealing is how versatile it can be. There is a wide range with varieties of tea plantations in India. And the northeastern states attract tea lovers from all across the world for its rich cultivation. Golden Needle, one of the popular tea variety from Arunachal Pradesh has made a world record for being sold at the highest ever rate. Yes, on Thursday, August 23 at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC), it was purchased at Rs. 40,000 per kilogram. Have You Tried the Blue Tea? The buyer is one of the oldest tea shops in Guwahati, Assam Tea Traders who bought 1.1 kg of Golden Needle tea from Arunachal Pradesh’s Donyi Polo tea estate. According to reports, this even breaks the set back of the previous month. On July 24, a kilo of Golden Tips tea from Manohari Tea Estate in Dibrugarh in Upper Assam was sold at the same auction centre for Rs. 39,001 a kilo. The citizens of Guwahati claimed it to be a world record for fetching the highest price at the auction.

Dinesh Bihani, Secretary of Guwahati Tea Auction Buyers Association, stated, “These types of specialty teas are attracting more and more buyers and producers to come together and use the GTAC platform. We hope that these specialty teas will make us achieve our past glory in the world map.” Bihani further informed that unique teas are encouraging more and more buyers and producers to come together.

The owner of Assam Tea Traders Lalit Kumar Jalan said that there is a rising demand for good tea and this Golden Needles will be sold through an online platform only; Absolutetea.in. This variety of tea has small buds which are carefully plucked and the leaves, have a coating of golden colour are soft and velvety. The Yunnan province in China which is just across Arunachal border to its east is known as the cradle of ‘gold tip teas’. Donyi Polo Tea Estate is the only tea garden in India which is producing golden needles.
