World Youth Skills Day is observed on July 15 every year for promotion abilities and skills. This year, UNESCO and the UNEVOC Network will join the global celebrations to mark World Youth Skills Day (WYSD) and raise awareness about the importance of youth skills development! World Youth Skills Day 2019 theme is 'Learning to learn for life and work'.
According to the United Nations, there are 1.2 billion young people aged between 15 to 24 years which accounts for 16 percent of the global population. Engagement of youth is important in achieving sustainable, inclusive and stable societies to thwart worst threats and challenges to sustainable development among others. But, young people are almost three times more likely to be unemployed than adults. They often get a lower quality of jobs, 'greater labour market inequalities, and longer and more insecure school-to-work transitions'. Along with it, women are more likely to be underemployed and underpaid and end up doing part-time jobs or work on contracts.
Organised by the Permanent Missions of Portugal and Sri Lanka along with UNESCO, ILO and the Office of the Secretary-General's Envoy on Youth, this year the UN's observance of the WYSD will shed light on the mechanisms needed to operationalize lifelong learning. TikTok and National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) have collaborated to celebrate 'World Youth Skills Day 2019' by launching an in-app campaign 'Skills4All'.
