The World Water Monitoring Day is observed on September 18 every year to highlight the importance of water conservation. The day was established by America's Clean Water Foundation (ACWF) as a global educational outreach program in 2003. The day creates public awareness in protecting water resources around the world. It aims at empowering people to conduct basic checking of their local water bodies. Water being a precious commodity that sustains life on Earth, conservation of water is of great importance. Conserving water is not just the duty of a community or a government, but holds significance on an individual level. As we observe World Water Monitoring Day 2019, we have listed down five important ways in which you can conserve water at home. Is Drinking 8 Glasses of Water Good for Health? 60% of People Believe in This Myth.
While 71 percent of the Earth is covered in water, only three per cent is freshwater, of which 0.5 per cent is available for drinking. 97 per cent of the water on the Earth is seawater cannot be used for daily usage. Hence it is essential to conserve water and use it wisely. Many regions in the world are facing extreme water crisis with no access to even drinking water. Conserving water also reduces greenhouse gas emissions related to treating and distributing water.
Manage Your Shower Time
Set a timer when you are in the shower to ensure you don't cross the time limit and end up using excess water. Every minute you are in the shower you end up using 17 litres of water.
Fix That Leaking Pipe
We may all have a leaking pipe at home which always goes unnoticed. As it does not create much of a problem, we let it leak. But let's be responsible and conserve precious water.
Shut the Tap
A thread of water quietly dripping in the bathroom hardly affects anyone. Those leaking taps at public places also get a similar treatment. There is a need for awareness among people about the dire consequences of water shortage. Only then people will take a collective effort in saving water.
Opt For a Low-Flush Toilet
Opt for modern dual-flush systems that help in saving huge amounts of water. This flush will help in reducing the use of water with every flush.
Use High-Efficiency Washing Machine, Dishwasher And Other Electrical Appliances
Instead of washing two or three clothes at a time, pile all your dirty clothes and put them in the machine at once. Treat your dishwasher also similarly. It will not only help in saving water but also conserve electricity.
While these are some of the ways in which you can save water at home, world nations and governments also need to take necessary steps in conserving water. There should be strict action against polluting freshwater bodies and collective measure must be taken in using water wisely.
