World Population Day History and Significance
World Population Day aims to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues. The global event was established by the then-Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989, an outgrowth of the interest generated by the Day of Five Billion, which was observed on 11 July 1987. By resolution 45/216 of December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) decided to continue observing World Population Day to enhance awareness of population issues, including their relations to the environment and development.
The day was suggested by Dr KC Zachariah in which population reached five billion when he worked as Sr Demographer at the World Bank. World Population Day was observed for the first time on July 11, 1990 in more than 90 countries. Since then, a number of a number of UNFPA country offices, organisations and institutions have commemorated World Population Day across the world.
World Population Day aims to highlight the urgency and importance of population issues, including their relations to the environment and development. The day increases awareness of various population issues such as the importance of family planning, gender equality, poverty, maternal health and human rights. The themes often cover topics like family planning, gender equality, poverty, maternal health, and human rights.
